San Jose State continued to roll in Las Vegas with a big 34 -24 win on Saturday. The Spartans are now 5-3 and poised to make a run at a spot in the Mountain West title game. There are three in-conference games left for the Spartans. If they win all three games, the Spartans will find themselves in the title game. UNLV proved early they were over-matched by the men from San Jose as the Spartans jumped out to a commanding 24-3 halftime lead. Although the Rebels made a run in the second half, San Jose State continued to run the ball effectively, scoring 10 second half points to put the game away. San Jose State simply punished UNLV, rushing for 312 yards overall with Freshmen Jarrod Lawson leading the way. David Fales only had 150 yards passing and two interceptions, but that didn’t matter on a day when the rushing attack couldn’t be stopped.
Future opponents of the Spartans will have to take notice. Offensively, SJSU is dangerous with a balanced, complete attack. Add a defense that is improving weekly and the threat of Bené Benwikere lurking in the secondary, and the Spartans seem to be a force to be reckoned with. Benwikere also joined in on the fun with an interception in the contest. Next up, San Diego State. The quest for the Mountain West title has officially begun.
